Malverne Resident Selected for 'Teach for America'

Malverne resident Erin Elizabeth Graetzer has been chosen to serve her country for the next two years as part of “Teach for America," a national corps of teachers committed to raising student achievement.

A recent Magna Cum Laude graduate of Marist College in Poughkeepsie, Graetzer was honored to remain on the dean’s list every semester as an undergraduate. In addition to her many volunteer projects there, she was president of the Marist College Dance Ensemble.

During the past school year, more than 10,000 Teach for America members taught 750,000 students in urban and rural public schools. Selection by the corps is focused on individuals who demonstrate superior leadership in addition to academic success.

Graetzer has always shown special leadership qualities. At Our Lady of Lourdes she has assisted with the summer camp, youth ministry and family mass over the last eight years.

At Sacred Heart Academy in Hempstead, Graetzer was president of the Dance Theater, starred as “Clara” in their annual production of the “Nutcracker” and received the “Teacher of Tomorrow Award." She also was selected to play “Christine” in Tap to Pointe’s ballet production of “Phantom of the Opera.”

"Once again, Malverne has another resident who is committed to giving of themselves to help others," Mayor Patricia McDonald said.
