Teams Forming For Malverne's Souper Scavenger Hunt

Learn how you can help feed the hungry by competing in or contributing to this year's event.

Motivated by friendly competition and a desire to feed the hungry, young Malvernites and their families collected roughly 2,200 pounds of food at last year's Souper Scavenger Hunt. All the non-perishable items gathered by the 14 teams were used to stock the St. Vincent de Paul Society's pantry at , which is donated to local families who are struggling.

"Our parish and the Malverne community were so very generous. " O.L.L. Youth Ministry Coordinator Linda Baldacchino, said regarding last year's scavenger hunt. "[They] gave a literal 'ton' of food when the hunters came around."

The Souper Scavenger Hunt, hosted by the Malverne Civic Association and Our Lady of Lourdes's youth ministry, returns for its third year on March 31 with a big goal. Its orgnanizers are hoping to collect 1.5 tons, surpassing the amount collected last year by 800 pounds.

To accomplish this, teams will once again compete for prizes by hitting the streets of Malverne, knocking on doors and asking residents to donate non-perishable food items for the pantry.

Here's two ways you can help.

  1. Form a team: Gather your friends, family or neighbors and create a team to compete in the scavenger hunt, which will take place from noon to 3 p.m. on March 31. The sign-up form is attached to this article (under PDFs) or you can access it from OLL's Web site.
  2. Donate food: Don't want to play the game? Well, you can still help the teams who will be competing and feed the hungry. When one of the players knocks on your door on March 31, be ready to hand over some of the items mentioned above or other boxes or cans of non-perishable food. If you know you won't be home, you can leave your donation outside your door and it will be picked up.
