VIDEO: Families Fill 5K Backpacks For Children in Need, Honor Callahan

Project H.O.T. S.H.O.T.S. holds annual school supply drive and honors memory of late Malverne leader Jim Callahan.

In the spirit of helping others and in honor of one man who dedicated his life to doing so, families from Malverne and surrounding communities came together Saturday to fill thouands of backpacks for kids in need.

Project H.O.T. S.H.O.T.S., a Malverne-based charity, held its annual Operation: 5,000 Backpacks in Howard T. Herber Middle School from noon to 4 p.m. This year, the school supplies drive for the less fortunate was renamed in honor of the late Malverne Deputy Mayor and H.O.T. S.HO.T.S. Vice President Jim Callahan.

Children and adults donated their time to fill backpacks with important school supplies, which in turn will be shipped out to the needy not only locally, but around the world. Click on the video above for coverage of the event.
