Snowstorm Taking Aim at Long Island Later This Week

First storm of 2014 expected to pack at least six inches of snow and gusty winds.

Confetti won't be the only thing falling from the sky in the New Year–a snowstorm is forecast to bring at least a half foot of snow later this week.

The National Weather Service is calling for a storm to ride up the East Coast starting late Wednesday evening, dropping flakes throughout the day Thursday into Friday morning.

Meteorologists have forecast the storm to bring six-to-eight inches of snow island-wide, with totals potentially higher locally.

With a blast of deep cold air moving in on New Year's Day, temperatures should be cool enough to maintain snowfall throughout the duration of the storm.

Strong winds associated with the storm could blow between 25 and 35 mph with higher gusts, dropping wind chill values down as low as five degrees at the end of the storm on Friday. The winds will also cause blowing and drifting snow, which could lead to whiteout conditions.

The National Weather Service has not issued any winter storm watches, advisories or warnings at this time.
