Chestnut Street School was built in 1912 and is the oldest of the buildings in the West Hempstead school district. It was a four-room school house until the district added the back wing in 1927. Two decades later, it constructed the front portion, which now serves as the district's administration building. Today, the school provides instruction to approximately 135 kindergarten students. The school grounds also have a baseball field and playground.
