The Malverne Department of Public Works' headquarters is located on what was once the site of Grassy Pond. The Malverne DPW is responsible for sanitation in the villlage, including collection of garbage and recycled material, and special pick-ups. (On the night prior to collection, residents are permitted to put out their trash cans and recycle bins after 7pm. Check the DPW's website for a detailed pick-up schedule, which varies by sector.) The department also handles snow removal and maintains the parking lots, parks and athletic fields throughout the village. The beautiful landscaping and flowers that canvass the center of town, village hall, the library, the firehouse, the Historical Society's house and other municipal properties in the neighborhood are planted and cared for by the Malverne DPW. In the summer, the department invites residents to stop by its headquarters weekdays from 8am until 2pm to pick up free fire wood. The DPW also maintains all of the village's vehicles, street signs, traffic lines and signs, and irrigation systems. The Department also trims and removes trees for the village, and handles special projects such as designing new parks.
