In Newsday, Charles Cardillo, superintendent of Manhasset SD stated, "We believe that it is theRead More incredibly high value that the Manhasset schools place on the four A's -- academics, the arts, athletics and after school activities -- that allows our school community to be considered one of the premier school districts in the nation." It's interesting to note the order in which he arranged the four A's: 1) Academics 2) Arts 3) Athletics 4) After-School Activities. Wouldn't be nice to see the good people of Wantagh and Seaford prioritize the activities in their schools in a similar way? Oh wait… Many have opted out of higher academic standards. I wonder how many parents will have their children opt out of tryouts for sports. I mean, those two-a-days can be pretty grueling.

Hmm--it's all about academics. That's awesome. I wonder why kids play lacrosse or volunteer atRead More church, or play an instrument. After all, you shoulndt take into account one factor other than test scores. Cool. I just happen to think that not many of you believe that's the way it works.
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.
Millsey April 23, 2014 at 04:53 pm
So educational professionals and people that hire these students out of college or high schoolRead More shouldn't have a seat at the table? Who should make curriculum decisions? The local school board member that doesn't know anything about a high quality education? The state government that might think creationism and abstinence only education is still what our children should be learning? I'd rather have the Common Core which brought together education professionals from all of the states to make sure my kids have a leg up when they graduate High School. They also brought in companies that have decades of education or hiring experience. What's wrong with having people that know what they are talking about, setting our policy? I'd rather have professionals making these decisions and not some groups that create facebook pages and youtube videos demonizing Common Core because they don't want to listen to the facts.
Bonnie Parker April 23, 2014 at 05:12 pm
In the time some of you have spent obsessing about this, you probably could have home-schooled yourRead More kids a couple of grades. I don't know what you're so het up about, but I suspect it's not the quality of your kids' education.
Susan Harris April 23, 2014 at 08:18 pm
"About the "socialist" or anti-American aspect- I know what people are talkingRead More about,.....There are to my knowledge, no CC social studies textbooks yet. It is the textbook publishers themselves (who helped write the CC and will produce all further materials anyway) who are twisted in this way. School boards don't actually read the textbooks they order....I didn't notice either until the CC thing came up. Then I said "What the hell is this?" ................................................................. .................................................................................. To put your mind at ease, what you were reading in your child's social studies books did not come from standards developed from the Common Core. CC standards only covers the content areas of literacy and math. On a separate note, High school history teachers, including myself, have long opined that there is a general void of knowledge coming from students in the lower grades. Since CT's American history standards received a failing grade from the notable Thomas B. Fordham foundation this is not surprising. But it is unacceptable. Just as our Governor, Commissioner, and State Board decided to substantially improve math and literacy teaching with the CC standards, we should look at the neighboring states of Mass. and NY who both rate in the upper tier- A, with their standards in American history.

I agree with B. Dub 100%! How was this kid able to scale a fence and just walk right over to theRead More plane? TSA: for all the harassing you do in the terminal...you ain't all that!! As far as the kid being a runaway..maybe he does face some serious abuse issues at home. He's damn lucky to be alive. But, I raised three boys, and a 16 year old boy can runaway for any collage of reasons. My kids never ran away but, I'm wondering if the fact that the plane was going to HAWAII has anything to do with it. It sounds a little compulsive to me. CPA need good follow up on this. Massa April 23, 2014 at 11:39 am
It makes me sick that these clowns steal and vandalize property that we all work hard for, but itRead More pisses me off even more that I don't see anything being done about it. I know we are all getting sick and tired of living in a county that has the highest taxes in the Country.I am getting real sick of getting crap service for our tax dollars. Nassau PD needs to get some real supervisors and get their police officers on the ball. First thing is real roll calls at police precincts. second is no more free meals where guys take advantage of businesses, I see these guys all the time at these places and don't pay a cent, sounds like corruption to me. Third is no more police booths or hanging out in firehouses.... WTF is that all about? Nassau firehouses have bars in them. The three cars hanging out bullshitting for hours has to stop.thugs are committing crimes and nothing is getting done. As far as dangerous precincts in Nassau, I will say the 1st and 5th are busy and have the most danger. Those officers should get the respect they deserve. It is sad that the other precincts don't give the community that they serve the respect they deserve.Walking in the door and making 150.000 dollars a year without overtime is pretty nice for the area's they work.I am sure city guys would take the city salary to work with less danger in nice areas everyday.

Agranon - I'm a moron because I am tired of everybody and his mother trying to put themselves inRead More every story? Then so be it - I'm a moron. To be honest, I am also really tired of all the people that were compelled to run the Boston Marathon because "I had to finish for all those who couldn't." Get over yourself. It was a tragedy. She's not doing it for "those who can't". She's doing it to maybe get on TV and she's probably feeling a little sanctimonious because she ran 26.2 miles and you didn't.
