George Washington School
347 William St, West Hempstead, NY 11552
When George Washington School opened in 1930, it functioned as a junior high school for students in the West Hempstead…More School District. The school house remained unchanged until 1956 when a wing was added to the building to accommodate growth in the community. A collection of "portable" classrooms was added in 1969, which were damaged in a fire that occurred at the school's site in the summer of 2010, but repaired in the following months. Today, the school teaches close to 400 students in grades 1 through 5. The school gives students the opportunity to participate in Student Government and work on a school newsletter in order to prepare them for some of the activities that will be available to them in middle school and high school. It also holds various educational and entertaining events throughout the year for students, their families and the rest of the community.
