The boy had laid there for 25 minites waiting for a county ambulance to arrive. After this incident, several members of the Lions Club and their president, Jon Viunu, went door-to-door and raised $6,000 to purchase an ambulance. Then, four Lions Club members and 19 village came together to form the Malverne Volunteer Ambulance Corps and raised an additional $1,000 to purchase the necessary equipment. They all completed 18 months of first aid training and then put the ambulance to service on a 24-hour basis. Today, MVAC has over 40 members and two fully equipped ambulances. In 2010, local groups came together to hold a concert to raise money to build a headquarters for the Malverne Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
