Maurice W. Downing School 55 Lindner Pl, Malverne, NY11565 Like Malverne Senior High School, Downing stands on a piece of land that had once been a lake. When this…More elementary school opened in 1929, it was known as the Lindner Place School and had only eight classrooms. Six years later, overcrowding forced the district to add six classrooms to the building and then another six in 1961. The school was renamed to honor Principal Maurice Downing, who had perished in a house fire. In the 1930s, the school educated students from Nassau County with infantile paralysis who required special services, and in the 1960s, the school was federally intergrated. Today, the school educates nearly 400 students each year. Famous former students include Olympic gold medalist Derrick Adkins and members of the Tuskegee Airmen.
