I moved to West Hempstead at 349 Madison Ave. at age 1 in 1957 from Jamaica, Queens with my family. Went to Chestnut St. School from K thru most of fifth grade when the school system changed things. Attend George Washington for the rest of fifth and sixth. Then the school system changed things again and GW change to a middle school in '68. Went there for 7th and 8th and then starting High School at West Hempstead H.S. up until part of 11th grade went I moved to Ormond Beach, Fl. I used to chase the Fire engines to calls, even had a fire radio, and if I could have become a firefighter as a young teen I would have. The WHFD was a great organization with wonderful people. Had a Newsday paper route and listen to the Mets win in ’69 on my transistor radio as I did my route. Remember, they were day games then. Saw the final catch of the Series in the bar nest to the Sugar Bowl. I was heavily into CB radio beginning at age 13 and was a member of Central Nassau REACT. Way too much to put of what I experienced growing up in this great community. If I had an offer and could move back I would. I am now single and yearn for those carefree days through '72.
