Malverne General Market Celebrates Grand Opening

Hempstead Avenue location was previously Associated Supermarket.

The new Malverne General Market's goal is simple: provide quality merchandise at reduced prices.

The store celebrated its grand opening Tuesday morning with a ribbon cutting ceremony, bringing out a number of eager shoppers, residents and local community leaders.

Three different supermarkets have failed at the 344 Hempstead Avenue location, with Associated being the last to shut down.

The future of the previously vacant 344 Hempstead Ave. was the subject of debate at a January village board meeting. Residents expressed concerns at the meeting that the new market might not fit in with the character of the neighborhood.

However, Malverne General Market co-owner Eddie Marinelli said this is not your average market.

“This is different than other stores,” Marinelli said. “ It’s a cross between Bed, Bath and Beyond, CVS and a mini-convenience store – at reduce prices.”

The store carries everything from bathroom and kitchen items, stationery, toys, school supplies, clothing, cleaning supplies, snacks and drinks, baby foods, and much more.

Marinelli said the store took five months to get up and running because of the size of the location and quantity of items required.
