Town Board Reviewing Reopening of Malverne Gas Station

Resident opposition forces Hempstead Town Board to evaluate potential problems.

The Hempstead Town Board is evaluating an application to reopen the gas station on Hempstead Avenue at the corner of Morris Avenue in Malverne.

The former USA Gas Station was closed in February, with repairs still taking place in its shop.

Newsday [paid link] reported:

The board held a public hearing last week on the application from Snuggle Ventures Inc. to rezone from residential to business a property on the northwest corner of Hempstead Avenue and Morris Avenue in Malverne Park, an unincorporated area of the town. The company also submitted a petition for a permit to install four storage tanks, each with a capacity of 22,000 gallons, within its existing gasoline service station property.

Michael Sahn, an attorney for the company that has submitted the application, told Newsday the property would not be changed, “there still would be one pump island with four dispensers” and the gas station would operate from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.

While the town board postponed its decision on the proposed station because of resident opposition -- many citing traffic as a major problem -- others told Patch that the reopening of the station would be a welcomed sight.

“We used to have a station in the center of town -- [that] closed,” resident Laura A Casini said. “Now this one on the outskirts of town closed. This is a huge inconvenience to anyone getting off or entering the Southern State.”

“I have missed the convenience of that gas station terribly,” resident Jeanne D'Esposito added. “It definitely needs to be reopened.”
