Whatever you think you thought about fairy tales is probably wrong.
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm are known for their collection of traditional German folk tales - Rapunzel, Snow White, Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty), Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, among countless others that made our childhoods brighter and lit up the movie screens of our youth. What most people don’t know is that many of these tales were written to scare children, not entertain them, and contain episodes of graphic violence and some very unsavory situations. These elements were conveniently left out once the tales were animated.

A Grimm Night, our second Halloween season production, celebrates the Brothers Grimm and their particular brand of gruesome folk tales.

You’ll hear a combination of old favorites and some of the more obscure tales - but all are beautifully written stories of murder, deception, decapitation, cannibalism, and other pleasantries that children in 19th century Germany apparently wanted to hear before bedtime.

This staged reading will take place in the house of the Malverne Historical Society (369 Ocean Ave., Malverne), a 19th century building. Tickets are $15 and are available now on our website (malvernetheatre.org). Seating is limited.
