After hours of heavy rain, Malverne, West Hempstead and Lynbrook residents began to see the first signs of what is expected to be a major blizzard Friday evening.

By 6:30 p.m., about an inch of snow had acculumated in Malverne, where Mayor Patricia Norris McDonald had declared a "snow emergency" and suspended overnight parking.

By Saturday morning, Malverne, Lynbrook and West Hempstead could see as much as 10 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

The snowstorm is expected to bring winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts as high as 60 mph and possible white-out conditions, making for dangerous driving conditions. Motorists are strongly urged to avoid traveling.

There's also the potential for trees and power lines to be brought down by the winds and heavy snow, resulting in outages.
