Blizzard Hits Malverne, WH and Lynbrook: Upload Your Pics

Heavy snowfall begins Friday evening with as much as eight inches expected by morning.

UPDATE (Feb. 8 at 11:30 p.m.) Malverne, West Hempstead and Lynbrook began to experience blizzard conditions late Friday night.

Although snow started falling in the area around 5 p.m., three hours later there was only about an inch of snow accumulation reported in the three communities.

But after a brief lull, the storm began to pick up steam later in the night. By 11:30 p.m., three more inches had accumulated in Malverne and continued to fall at a fast pace. The National Weather Service now predicts possible total nighttime snow accumulation for the area to be between 4 and 8 inches.

After hours of heavy rain, Malverne, West Hempstead and Lynbrook residents began to see the first signs of what is expected to be a major blizzard Friday evening.

By 6:30 p.m., about an inch of snow had acculumated in Malverne, where Mayor Patricia Norris McDonald had declared a "snow emergency" and suspended overnight parking.

By Saturday morning, Malverne, Lynbrook and West Hempstead could see as much as 10 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

The snowstorm is expected to bring winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts as high as 60 mph and possible white-out conditions, making for dangerous driving conditions. Motorists are strongly urged to avoid traveling.

There's also the potential for trees and power lines to be brought down by the winds and heavy snow, resulting in outages.

A blizzard warning remains in effect for the Tri-State area until 1 p.m. Saturday.
