Broadway Basics at Lynbrook's Plaza Theatrical Productions

Theater group puts on shows in neighboring communities.

While most of the performances take place in Bellmore and Westbury, the show can't go on without the planning and hard work of the Lynbrook-based Plaza Theatrical Productions, Inc.

Founded in 1983 by Phyllis and Kevin F. Harrington, the company puts on musicals, comedies and children's theater for a wide range of audiences that include schools, country clubs and senior citizen groups. Past productions include Evita, A Christmas Carol, My Fair Lady and The Wizard of Oz.

The company encourages young residents to take part in theater through its Performing Arts Academy, which offers children and teen programs.

"Research has proven that the arts provide young people with essential communication and creative tools that last a lifetime," said executive producer Kevin F. Harrington on the district's website. "Expression, focus, tolerance, perception, openness, articulation, confidence, awareness, motivation and self-esteem are just some of the qualities and traits that emerge through dramatic study."

The company also puts on shows at local schools through its Arts-in-Education series. After a performance, students have the opportunity to meet with the actors and actresses, to make it a more complete learning experience. Schools can also organize field trips to visit the theaters, which include Bellmore Theater and Westbury Manor.

"The Harringtons had a desire to bring fine arts as an affordable vehicle out here on Long Island," said Thea Sieban, the production company's public relations manager.

Currently, the company is looking for actors and singers — with availability during the week — to take part in its Arts-In-Education series, running from the middle of October to the end of May. Most rehearsals are held in the evening.
