Lynbrook Police Investigating Thefts at Legacy Infiniti

Series of larcenies at auto dealership on police department's radar.

Lynbrook police are investigating a series of larcenies that have been reported this year at on Sunrise Highway.

"If anybody is noticed around that dealership at any point during the night, they are going to be stopped and questioned," said Sgt. Ron Fleury, adding that the department conducts regular patrols in the area.

The subjects appear to be after tires and rims — Infiniti vehicles, including parts, are very expensive. On Jan. 11 or Jan. 12 of this year, $10,4000 worth of tires and rims were stolen from various vehicles on the lot. On Feb. 10, there was an attempted larceny of tires and rims — lug nuts on a 2011 Infiniti vehicle had been removed, but the subject apparently could not get away with the merchandise. However, a backpack filled with tools and gloves was found on the scene.

Lynbrook police came close to catching a subject on Feb. 8. Officers patrolling the area at about 4:20 a.m. saw an unidentified male near the back of the dealership. The subject fled the scene in a 2003 Honda, but to get away from police, he apparently had to ditch the vehicle. The subject escaped, but $5,000 worth of tires and rims were found inside the vehicle. When police returned to the Infiniti dealership, they discovered two vehicles had $1,000 worth of damage.

Fleury says Infiniti dealerships have traditionally been targeted because of the high value of the vehicle parts. "This is not something that has just started now," he said.

Just last October, Lynbrook police arrested Pennsylvania resident , charged with Grand Larceny in the second degree for allegedly stealing a $52,000 2010 Infiniti G37 convertible, a key fob, floor mats, and owner's manual. But that was the last arrest made in connection with incidents at the dealership.

The police department continues to investigate this year's incidents.
