Sure, it's easy to roll up to any one of the hundreds of christmas tree stands across Long Island and pluck out your blue spruce from the piles, but for many intrepid holiday cheer-seekers, that just doesn't cut it.
For locals who'd rather take the hacksaw into their own hands, there are a handful of tree farms in the area, all in Suffolk County, where you can cut your Christmas centerpiece.
The Mattituck farm is in its 17th season, offering pre-cut trees, balled and bur lapped trees and cut your own. Douglas Fir, White Pine and Norway Spruce are available for purchase. Wreaths, arches, centerpieces and other gifts and holiday decorations are available for purchase. On the weekends, families can participate in a train ride, can enjoy hot chocolate and popcorn and a visit from Santa. An antique sleigh museum is attached to the gift shop.
This Cutchogue tree farm has approximately 30 acres of land, with 65,000 trees growing in different stages. You can choose from Douglas Fir and Concolour Fir trees. The gift shop features handmade wreaths, snow globes, ornaments and other cheerful items. They are open daily until Christmas Eve from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. 631-734-8641.
A wreath shop, tractor rides, a live band, hot chocolate and Santa make this Southold tree farm a favorite yearly. Douglas Fir and Fraser Fir trees are featured on this farm. "Elves" will help you cut down your tree and secure it onto your car. The farm is open from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. every day through Christmas Eve, although it is suggested that customers come before 4:30 p.m. when it becomes dark. 631-765-4148.
