No. 91 — Take a Walk On Atlantic Avenue

Browse all the restaurants and shops on one of Lynbrook's main roads.

Our 10 installment in the "100 Things to Do in Lynbrook" is to take a walk up Atlantic Avenue and check out all the shops.

Walking up Atlantic Avenue has always been a favorite pastime for me for as long as I can remember. It was a traditional Saturday trip when I was a kid, especially after I got my allowance and could walk up to the stores and buy some sort of treasure. Many of the stores have changed since then, but many are still there and thriving. A couple of the stores have been on this street since the 1940s, such as (1911) and (1946).

There are many different types of shops as you go up and down Atlantic Avenue. Everyone in your family can find a place, or just enjoy getting some fresh air while looking in the windows. If you’re a longtime Lynbrook resident, you can reminisce about how the street used to look. As you look at , you can go back in time and remember when this used to be the home of the famous Woolworth’s, with the best lunch counter I can ever remember going to.

As you walk past you will remember how many cards and trinkets you have probably bought here throughout the years. ’s is always good for those Levi jeans. I remember that when country music was popular, Casey’s was one of the only places that carried western snap shirts, which were my dad’s all-time favorite.

At the end of the street, you can look in the windows of — nothing can put a smile on your face like seeing all the cute animals inside. If you are brave enough, you can walk around inside and hope you can walk back out without taking one of them home.

When you are done checking out all the shops, you might consider getting something to eat or just have a snack. Stop by and taste some of their delicious menu items, have a cup of coffee at the or walk over to and pick up an ice cream cone or sundae.

Our village has much to offer, and since we are celebrating our centennial year, what better way to help support our town than to stroll up and down Atlantic Avenue, maybe shop a little, eat a little, reminisce a little and have a great day visiting all the shops our town has to offer.
