#76 - Go Fish!

Grab your tackle box head for a fishing excursion at Hempstead Lake State Park.

Your next fishing trip could be just a short drive to Hempstead Lake Park in West Hempstead, where you can cast your line into one of three bodies of water.

You can fish all year-round at the New York State Park (A valid NY fishing license is required for patrons 16 years or older.)

McDonald, South Pond and Hempstead Lake are all stocked with trout in the fall and some target trout may be caught throughout the rest of the year. You could also hook other species, including large mouth bass, chain pickerel, black crappie, perch, tiger muskies, carp and sunfish.

In Hempstead Lake, the largest in Nassau County, you can take your fishing excursion off-land with a top boat and an annual permit ($50) issued by the park's office.

There are also fishing events held throughout the year that include competitions and workshops for introducing youngsters and novices to the sport including the I Fish NY festival. (Click on the image above to see photos of last year's program.)

Fishing at Hempstead Lake Park makes our list of the Top 100 things to do in the community. Even if you aren't a big fan of the sport, the scenic views from the fishing access points of Hempstead Lake and the park's ponds will make the excursion worth your while.

So grab your tackle box, pole, bait, perhaps, a buddy or go it alone, for an enjoyable day outdoors that's not far from home.
