Get Out - Your Local Guide to the Weekend, Aug. 12-14

The best events happening close to home this weekend.

Oliver! the Musical

Where: , 12 Westminster Rd., West Hempstead (Msgr. Smith Auditorium)

When: Friday, August 12 and Saturday, August 13 at 8 pm. Sunday, August 14 at 2 pm. A special pre-show called “Summer Luvin” begins outside the theater 30 minutes before each performance.

Why go: The St. Thomas Youth Theater is performing the classic musical “Oliver!," which follows the story of an orphan who is just not cut out for a life of crime.

Challenge of the Bands  

Where: Commuter Lot #3 (behind Hempstead Avenue, Francis Street and Trinity Place) in Malverne

When: Friday, August 12 at 7 pm.

Why go: The Malverne Youth Board Challenge of the Bands is showcasing four up-and-coming acts from our area: ChariotsPraetorian, Out of Order and Come check out the talent and enjoy this free outdoor concert.

Charity Swim-a-thon

Where: Greis Park, 55 Wilbur St., Lynbrook

When: Saturday,  August 13 7 a.m. – 10 a.m.

Why go: The Lynbrook Pool will be holding a Swim Across America event. Swim Across America raises funds to help find a cure for cancer with 100 percent of the money going to its beneficiaries. One of their primary beneficiaries is The MIRACLE pavilion at Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre.

Annual Bike Ride

Where: New York Avenue and W. Penn Street, Long Beach 

When: Saturday, August 13 at 9:30 a.m. - noon

Why go: Join other riders on this 12-mile route through Long Beach in memory of Jim Conlon, the founder and former president of  the Citizens United to Remove Barriers (C.U.R.B.). This local, non-profit assists the physically challenged by installing wheelchair ramps and lifts in and around their homes. Now in its eighth year, the ride will start at St. Ignatius Martyr Church and end at the Long Beach Recreation Center, where complimentary food and beverages will be served.

Saturday Night Boot Camp

Where:  Warren Levi Karate & Fitness, 398 Central Ave, Lawrence 

When: Saturday, August 13, 6 p.m.

Why go:  Warren Levi's Martial Arts and Fitness holds its weekly Saturday Night Boot Camp classes, bringing unique themes including dancing, 80's night and Training in the Dark, which uses glow in the dark lighting, to make martial arts training fun for the whole family. Free Concert

Where:  Long Beach Public Library, 111 W. Park Ave., Long Beach

When: Saturday, August 13, 2 p.m.

Why go:  The Long Beach Public Library will be hosting Good Vibrations.  They will be performing the sounds of Antonio Carlos Jobim and other Brazilian, Latin and jazz music for all to enjoy.  Len Hirsch will be on violin and guitar, and Tom Rizzuto will be playing the vibes and guitar.

Zumba Class

Where: , 111 N Oceanside Rd, Rockville Centre

When: Saturday, August 13 at 8:30 a.m. - 9:30a.m.  

Why go: Get your workout done with early. For only $5 you can enjoy this fun and popular exercise class inspired by Latin music and dance moves.

Charity Golf Outing

Where: 255 Lido Blvd, Lido Beach 

When: Saturday, August 13 at 9 a.m. 

Why go: Join Painting for Cures, a charity that helps hospitalized children and their families, for their 2nd Annual Golf Outing. You’ll get a full day of golf with a cart, food, beverages, contest, cocktail hour and chances to win great prizes. for more details.

Volleyball Tournament

Where: 1 Riverside Blvd, Long Beach, 

When: Saturday, August 13 at 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Why go: Players of all levels, from professional to novice, can enjoy the 4C Totally Light2Go doubles beach volleyball tournament.

Back-to-School Crafts

Where: Michaels Craft Store, 3610 Long Beach Rd, Oceanside 

When: Saturday,  August 13, noon – 2 p.m.

Why go:  Michaels will be hosting a variety of back-to-school events throughout the month of August. On Aug. 13, there will be a duck-tape-folder craft event. Everyone will have a chance to make a folder just in time for school.

Psychic Medium Encounter

Where: Sunny Atlantic Beach Club, 2035 Ocean Blvd, Atlantic Beach

When: Saturday,  August 13 6 pm – 10 pm

Why go: Psychic medium Richard is appearing at Sunny Atlantic Beach Club in Atlantic Beach. There will be dinner, dessert and coffee served. Richard promises a very enlightening and fun evening.
