June 17: One Valedictorian for Malverne, Pedestrian Killed, Weekend Planner and More

A look at the top headlines for this Friday in Malverne and West Hempstead.

The end of the work week brings with it a sense of closure for residents in Malverne and Lakeview, mainly the families affected by the valedictorian mix-up in the local school district.

Unfortunately, the West Hempstead community has also learned of the loss of a young man who was killed while crossing one of the region's most dangerous roadways.

  1. One Valedictorian: Earning the title of valedictorian for Malverne High School's Class of 2011 was no easy task for Aalique Grahame. Aside from academics, the scholar had to become a salutatorian and co-valedictorian before finally owning the top-ranked title. The district complied Thursday night with his request, as well as that of his classmate Sarah St. John, who accepted the salutatorian role. for the full story.
  2. Pedestrian Killed: Salem Enayetullah, 23, of West Hempstead (formerly Sharon, Mass.) was killed while crossing Hempstead Turnpike in West Hempstead late Wednesday night. Police have arrested a 38-year-old Mineola man, who they charged with the fatal hit-and-run. Click here for the story.
  3. Flag Day: The village of Malverne commemorated Flag Day on Tuesday with a ceremony at the gazebo, during which they recognized a number of local students for their spectacular essays about the American flag. Check out the story and photos today.
