Lynbrook Library Board Meeting Highlights

Trustees discuss plans for new website, reports increase is summer reading sign ups.

The Lynbrook Public Library met on Sept. 14 to discuss the business of the library and reflect on summer happenings. The following are topics discussed at the meeting.

Trustees were excited to learn that registration and books read for the summer reading programs had increased from last year. Teens in grades 6-12 read two more books than last year, with registration up 15 people. Residents ages 3 to grade 5 read 113 more books, with registration up by 408. And for the library's Baby Reading Club (ages birth to 35 months), 16 more residents were registered.

Trustees discussed an incident involving bed bugs being found in books that were returned at the Uniondale Public Library. There have been no reported cases of that happening in Lynbrook, trustees said, but they have since reached out to the library's exterminator for a price quote. Trustees discussed the possibility of installing an outdoor book drop, to help prevent bed bugs being brought into the library.

Library Director Robyn Gilloon discussed ideas for a new library website. Though planning is still in the early stages, Gilloon said the library is leaning toward Joomla, a program many Nassau libraries are currently using. The library currently uses Dreamweaver.

Some of the advantages of the new website will be a more modern look, having upcoming events on the homepage, and a live blog, Gilloon said.

At the Sept. 20 village board meeting, library officials will request funding for a new roof for the facility. The library is owned by the village.
