East Rockaway Gym Raises Funds for Wounded Veteran

The fitness club is helping raise funds needed to purchase a cutting-edge, motorized all-terrain wheelchair for the veteran.

East Rockaway's ROK Health & Fitness, along with surrounding towns and villages and the Nassau Coalition of Veterans, have come together in a community effort to raise the funds needed to purchase an Action Track Chair for a wounded veteran.

An Action Track Chair is a "cutting-edge motorized all-terrain wheelchair" that enables a wounded veteran to venture where no traditional wheel chair is capable of going," ROK said in a release.

"No longer is the operator limited by wheel chair friendly surfaces," ROK said. "This extraordinary chair opens new possibilities and lessons the restrictions from a conventional wheelchair."

The brave veteran receiving the chair is Christopher Levi, a Holbrook resident who was severely injured when his Hume was hit by an improvised exploding device in Iraq. Levi suffered critical injuries, including the loss of both of his legs. Read more about Christopher's story here.

On Wednesday Dec. 11,  7 p.m. at ROK Health & Fitness, the club will be having a dedication celebration to present Levi with the Track Chair.
