Letter to West Hempstead BOE: Restore DiMiceli's Reputation

Resident Lilly Haliasos asks the school board to out an end to the DiMiceli controversy.

An open letter to the West Hempstead Board of Education:

It is about time that you put an end to the around your fellow board member Mrs. Cynthia DiMiceli.

She stands accused of breaking the law for exercising her constitutional right to freedom of speech as well as her fiduciary responsibility to her constituents by expressing her personal views on the proposed school budget in a letter mailed to the community by her own funds.

You all very well know, including your seasoned veteran attorney, that the legal authority of individual school board members as outlined in the handbook given to each and everyone of you when first elected, states:

“School Board members have the right to express their own personal views on school district issues, including the school budget and other propositions. However…when writing a letter:

a: …. They must explicitly state that the letter expresses their personal views

b. Not use district funds: http://www.nyssba.org/clientuploads/nyssba_pdf/LegalOMLPresentations09.pdf

The personality conflicts among the seven of you is the real problem .

In your eagerness to discredit Mrs. DiMiceli you have succeeded in discrediting yourselves as a trustworthy and transparent governing body.

It is time you look in the mirror and ask yourselves:

If your children behaved in this manner, if they withheld the truth and allowed a person they dislike to be wrongfully accused, what would you expect them to do?

It is about time you restored an innocent person’s most valuable commodity, their reputation.

It is time you apologized to the community you serve and restore your own credibility.

Prove to all you were worth electing.

West Hempstead and our students need to look up to something better than what they see right now.

Honesty is more than not lying, it is about truth telling.

Respectfully,

Lilly Haliasos

West Hempstead Resident

School board members have a right to express their own personal views on school district issues, including the school budget and other propositions. However, school board members who wish to express their personal opinions about issues before the voters must: a. Clearly distinguish their personal views from those of the board they represent. For example, when writing a letter to the editor of a newspaper in support of a voter proposition, school board members must be sure to explicitly state that the letter expresses their personal views (Appeal of Wallace, 46 Ed. Dep‟t Rep. 347 (2007)). b. Not use district funds, facilities or channels of communication to encourage voters to vote in support or against the school budget or any proposition (Appeal of Johnson, 45 Ed. Dep‟t Rep. 469 (2006); Appeal of Goldin, 40 Ed. Dep‟t Rep. 628 (2001); see also Appeal of Grant, 42 Ed. Dep‟t Rep. 184 (2002); Appeal of Allen, 39 Ed. Dep‟t Rep. 523 (2000)).

I have been following this story with great interest. Your letter seems to point fingers directly at the West Hempstead School Board for creating the controversy. However, if you look at how this all unraveled, it seems that it all started when community residents called for DiMiceli's resignation and not the School Board. (http://malverne-lynbrook.patch.com/articles/trustee-dimiceli-criticized-for-campaigning-against-school-budget) So Ms. Haliasos, you should be castigating your neighbors and not the school board. This entire issue smells funny- I have seen it in politics before. Is DiMiceli creating her own controversy to keep herself in the limelight? Does she have a personal vendetta against certain school board members and is using this ploy as a way of getting under their skin? In all fairness, regardless of what the true story is, she is equally at fault for continuing the saga when it should have been over long ago. Drop all this nonsense and get back to business. You want your legacy to be judged on the results of your work as a school board member and not your battle with the community and your fellow board members. Public criticism comes with the territory when you are in public office.

Schools would run more efficiently if more board members spoke their minds and didn't act like sheep.

I did a little back reading on this district especially about the Candidates and what this seems to be is a plain ol' P---ing match between relatively NEW members and some members who have been on your board for what seems like EONS. People dont like the status quo challenged claiming "this is not the way we DO things here" "We dont need to be educated we have been doing this without your input for years and will continue to do so even over your objections" THAT seems to be the crux of the matter people.. and it IS common in EVERY district especially in ones where board members have been on the for double digits. However MOSt other districts seem to overcome the closed minds on EACH side and come at some point to realize that not everything done the old way is RIGHT and not everything challenged is wrong..PICK and choose your fights and make sure you have the documentation and information to SUPPORT your side and be very aware what MAY have worked 5-10-15 20 years ago is not sufficient to meet the challenges of today..The taxpayers AND the Students need BOTH sides to LISTEN and LEARN and expand their knowledge base to insure they meet their responsibilites both on the educational AND fiduciary levels. What worked yesterday MAY NOT work for today and tomorrow. And people who WANT change must understand that sometiomes its takes LONGER to obtain then they think. Bottom line is you ALL have to stop acting like teenagers , get over yourselves and WORK TOGETHER!

@TChermanski, your comment "Does she have a personal vendetta against certain school board members and is using this ploy as a way of getting under their skin? In all fairness, regardless of what the true story is, she is equally at fault for continuing the saga when it should have been over long ago. Drop all this nonsense and get back to business. You want your legacy to be judged on the results of your work as a school board member and not your battle with the community and your fellow board members. Public criticism comes with the territory when you are in public office" THIS Could also be offered to your board president and the other members of the board who have done NOTHING to stop this chidlishness in FACT they have fanned the flames IE : your Board Presidents letter to the editor which appears to an outsider to self serving" its not us its her" scenarion even suggesting ms dimiceli resigns .. Also the boards REFUSAL to read the Legal representatives findings is a CLEAR signal that they will do nothing to stop the assumption and inuendos. It APPEARs they WANT the DRAMA to continue to discredit Ms Dimiceli. ALL for their OWN benefit. Otherwise they would ended this chidlishness read the letter, the president of the board would not have written a letter to the editor and been done with it. My question is WHY HAVENT THEY RELEASED THE LETTER?

@Lorraine DeVita- You seem angry for someone who does not even live in West Hempstead. Do you want FACTS? You must not be aware that Ms. Dimiceli not only voiced her opinion against the budget but also publically supported candidates running against the incumbants. Nothing wrong with that however, the incumbants, who have a long histroy on the WH board, won the election by a big margin. They received overwhelming support by the community as did the budget. So while everyone on this thread can bicker and argue about the drama while pointing fingers at the veteran board members, you must face the fact that those board members have the support of the majority of the community based on the recent election. The fingers should also be pointed at Dimiceli for "fanning the flames" as well.

I am not angry quite frankly i am laughing - This entire group is supposed to be working FOR the taxpayers and students. , They dont have to like each other but they DO have to work together . What Ms dimiceli DID WAS LEGAL, , whether she is liked or disliked , whether you believe she is the world biggest PITA is not the issue . Ms Dimiceli WON her spot her she wasnt appointed so atleast a few people feel she has merit. Perhaps you should all calm down LISTEN to each other and stop being so defensive and possibly learn something new from someone who has different opinions and viewpoints. And that goes BOTH ways..Its a two way street. Seems this board collectively is jumping on one member becasuse she doesnt AGREE with the old guard. IMHO this is purely a power struggle between a new member of the board and the those who have been on the board for eternity and who dont like to admit that change is neccessary because according to them everything is just fine and Ms Dimiceli is "Chicken Little" HELLO people the education received At WH at best under the leadership of the old guard hasnt exactly set the educational world on fire now has it. This is nothing more then a good old fashion CAT FIGHT.. young versus old, new versus old , and in the meantime you are all losing your dignity..and the entire BOARD is losing its credibility and your teachers unions is going to WALK all over you ! Good luck WH!
