UPDATE: Anti-Semitic Graffiti Found at Lynbrook High School

Students allegedly threatened with losing prom and graduation.

Story updated at 12:04 p.m. on June 9.

Students were allegedly threatened with losing prom and graduation on the last day of classes Friday morning after anti-Semitic graffiti was found behind Lynbrook High School.

A photo sent to Lynbrook Patch confirmed that a graphic anti-Semitic phrase, along with several other graffiti markings, was posted on the back of the school.

Among the phrases were "F%@* Jew," "Smokey Joe" and "563."

According to Urban Dictionary, 563 is "A street gang established in Lynbrook" made up of mostly Caucasian and Hispanic males. "They 'Jump each other in' following a blood in blood out rule." The "563" relates to the Lynbrook area code 11563.

One resident told Patch that the high school is "basically on lockdown" and that students have to be escorted to and from bathrooms.

The resident also said that if the students responsible for the graffiti did not confess by 2 p.m., students would lose their prom and potentially their graduation.

Lynbrook Police were the high school Friday investigating the incident.

The Superintendent of Lynbrook Schools, Dr. Santo Barbarino, released the following statement Saturday morning:

"On Friday, it was brought to the district's attention that an exterior wall at Lynbrook High School was vandalized with disturbing phrases and other inappropriate markings. The district immediately contacted the Lynbrook Police Department who launched an investigation in order to determine the parties responsible. The district supplied law enforcement officials with surveillance video obtained from the school’s security cameras and is conducting its own internal investigation.

"If you have any information pertaining to the above mentioned incident, please contact the Lynbrook Police Department or Lynbrook High School Principal Joseph Rainis at 516-887-0200."

The school district has not confirmed nor denied the alleged threatened cancellation as of Saturday morning.

The Lynbrook prom is currently scheduled for 8 p.m. on June 21 at the Milleridge Cottage.

This is a breaking news story. Lynbrook Patch will provide more details once they are made available.

Lynbrook is no longer the same. We do not feel safe anymore. A fight among LHS male students and other teenagers (not sure if they live in Lynbrook) broke out on Atlantic Ave.

I say they should only worry about spending 5 million on turf fields.

Give the whole thing a rest it's probably like 10 dweeby burnouts who call themselves the 563 had nothing better to do than grafitti the school. I never hear of any stabbings and knife fights like the bloods. As far as the drinking/smoking pot thing, every school on LI and probably across the whole US has ki8ds smoking weed and having fake ID to drink. Where were all you people in HS? Kansas or something? This didn't go on when you were a kid, give me a break.

Nuisance, quality of life crimes as well as village codes infractions are mysteriously being ignored? As a former NYC resident who left for these same reasons, it certainly does not bode well for Lynbrook.
BigIdeas June 12, 2012 at 12:59 PM
Since the students are threatened with the loss of the prom and graduation almost every year, I think the students should boycott the prom and graduation. Give them what they want. Activities with no students.

You know Jason I feel exactly the sane as you. I came from queens ( loved across from a high school on a major intersection ) , and was never awaken by hordes of screaming kids at night. I did have one issue where a few kids would sit on my stoop and wait for the bus, leaving behind some trash. I spoke with them one day and explained that they could use my stoop as a seat but not a garbage. They were polite as could be and I never had a issue again. NOW living in east rockaway I have had to tell kids that my property was not a TOILET, A GARBAGE CAN FOR BEERS , A PLACE TO PASS OUT , NOR A PLACE TO SIT IN FRONT OF AND SCREAM AT THE TOP OF THIER LUNGS AT 1 AM. The best part about it is that I matain the same firm but fair attitude and was ALWAYS met with resistance and rude attitude. This is out youth and this is where America not just lynbrook is going. We have spoiled and reality showed our kids obnoxious.
tommyboy June 12, 2012 at 01:59 PM
Oh and big ideas you are right its the administrations fault .... I also think they should ban both and instead take to the streets in tuxedo's and prom gowns and do thier drinking and partying on a corner or driving in a car .... That's how they have the most fun anyway.
johnny ng June 12, 2012 at 02:20 PM
@tommyboy - maybe the Nassau County cops could help you out with the problems. But dont worry there are plenty of East Rockaway and Hewlett Harbor kids too in those hordes you talk about.
tommyboy June 12, 2012 at 02:46 PM
You know johnny its funny you say that .... I have spoken with the ncpd cops who patrol my area ( 4 different guys , all very nice ). All of them tell me the same thing .... When they do stop and I.d. said kids they are from lynbrook. Now I'm sure that there is always a exception, but it seems that the lynbrook p.d. likes to push the hordes over the border and out of thier area.
johnny ng June 12, 2012 at 02:49 PM
@tommyboy - where the kids are from has no impact on enforcing the law - the question should be why arent the NCPD officers enforcing the law
tommyboy June 12, 2012 at 02:50 PM
Oh and johnny I'm not worried cause no matter where they are from THESE LITTLE ANIMALS ARE NOT MY KIDS.
johnny ng June 12, 2012 at 02:50 PM
@tommyboy - yes many lynbrook parents do drop their kids off over in that area because thats where the kids want to hang out becaude of two things - the availability of alcohol and realization they wont be bothered by the police. Maybe the question should be why arent the NCPD cops doing as good as job as the Lynbrook cops.

I go out running between 3:30 - 4:00 in the morning & I see ALOT of police cars around the neighborhood so I don't think the lack of police is the isssue. i agree with many other posts that it is the parents responsibilty to keep the kids in check
johnny ng June 12, 2012 at 03:10 PM
@tommboy - if you are not worried why do you care then if they hang out on your porch or pee on your lawn?
tommyboy June 12, 2012 at 03:12 PM
Oh now I get it johnny ...your one of those guys ... Go troll somewhere else
tommyboy June 12, 2012 at 03:23 PM
Has anyone found out what the outcome of all this is ?
Matthew Hogan June 12, 2012 at 03:27 PM
@tommyboy: I left multiple messages with the high school yesterday and none of my calls were returned. Same happened on Friday. I will continue to look into the situation and a new story will be posted on the site as soon as I'm giving any new information. -- Matthew Hogan Associate Regional Editor
tommyboy June 12, 2012 at 03:36 PM
Thanks Matt ... I don't see anything being cancelled, nor would I agree if it was. This was by one or a few misguided youths, and to punish the whole would not be right either.
Jason June 12, 2012 at 05:48 PM
Do ya think they we're polite and obeyed because they would have gotton a beating. Unfortunately today, they're so protected their parents can't even discipline them w/o fear. In my neighborhood, Ozone Park back then you didn't get second chances!
Jason June 12, 2012 at 05:50 PM
between 3:30 AND 4am YOU GOT SPUNK!

Interesting comments to say the least, the one that especially caught my eye was from Dr. Barbarino “The school district has not confirmed nor denied the alleged threatened cancellation as of Saturday morning.” ”? I suppose keeping the “Sword of Damocles” hanging over the Senior Class will help get to the bottom of this…….. Nice way to finish off the Senior Year holding hostage the entire Senior Class for the actions of a few idiots is as OBSCENE as the act itself. Did the Admiration forget their lessons in the “Bill of Rights” and how “Due Process” works? Don’t get me wrong the Prom and Graduation is not a right but the Students dammed well-earned it and the Parents most certinly paid for it (School Property Taxes) in case anyone forgot!!! This has to be the biggest Autocratic overreach I have witnessed in this School District since I’ve moved here. The Administration should be ashamed of them-selves!! Maybe the District should have put more of those Hi-Definition cameras to use for Security rather than putting them in the classrooms! Not sure what the outcome will be but I hope all the Parents of Graduating Seniors remember this next year when the Administration comes “Hat in Hand” looking for money “For the Kids”…………..

@Tom Garrett: That is not a quote from Dr. Barbarino. It is simply an update that I provided in the story as of Saturday morning. A new story will be posted on the site shortly. -- Matthew Hogan Associate Regional Editor

Lyndell< you are absolutely right but all of these comments about Section 8 NOT being part of the problem IS a part of the problem. There is not a person out there that does not believe that everyone deserves better or that there are people on section 8 that have gotten a raw deal but when the village of Lynbrook openly allows this because there are officials getting rich off of it well thats when there is a problem. When the drivers for POPS wings are dropping off beer to the kids in the street that is a problem. When there are kids hanging out all hours of the night in packs damaging property of others that is a problem. The biggest problem in this once beautiful and well respected village is that there are so many public officials that have personal agendas that they have forgotten that this was a get place to live, now its just OK!
Knowledge June 12, 2012 at 08:13 PM
LPD are creatures of habit!!! They don't respect the guy up top so what do you expect!!! Security guards at best, while they mooch off of local businesses!!
Victoria Pearint June 12, 2012 at 08:14 PM
@Tom Garrett - talk about overreach there is no guarantee in the Bill of Rights related to proms or graduation. The school controls these not the students or parents.

Thank you for the correction Matt and my apologies to Dr. Barbarino for the misquote but somehow I don’t think this was just a rumor, none the less it seems to have worked itself out VP, In case you missed it “Don’t get me wrong the Prom and Graduation is not a right but the Students dammed well-earned it and the Parents most certainly paid for it (School Property Taxes) in case anyone forgot!!!” Guess you like "Autocratic Rule" rather than keeping with traditions, Common Sense and Due Process.........
Tom Garrett June 12, 2012 at 08:51 PM
Due Process: "A simple definition means due process requires notice and an opportunity to be heard before adverse action is taken against you. In criminal cases examples of due process include the need for probable cause to arrest someone and that a criminal defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by an impartial judge or jury. Due process does not just exist in a criminal trial, any time a person's property interest may be taken due process protections also apply. The courts have ruled that possessions such as a government issued license and even civil service jobs are property, which may only be revoked after a hearing. A quasi governmental organization like a homeowner's association is also subject to due process requirements. If a homeowner's association wants to fine a resident for bylaw violations such as excessive noise or because their house paint is the wrong color a hearing must first be held where the resident is given the opportunity to be heard." Of all the years living in Lynbrook with my family, we never saw an act of violence like this, especially among high school students. I understand kids get into fights ect. But this was something serious. A group of male teenagers (like I said, I'm not sure they live in Lynbrook or even were students of LHS) stormed into the deli and started beating one of the LHS student. Everything happened so fast. This was during LUNCH TIME! Which to me is ridiculous. Obviously, the deli workers/owners called the cops, however it was too late because the aggressors fled. I don't know whats going on..however, it was never like this before. It's sad.
