Crime Nearby: Four Men Arrested for Hate Crime

A round-up of the top crime stories of the week from neighboring communities.

The following information was supplied by the Nassau County Police Department, Rockville Centre Police Department and Garden City Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation, and does not indicate guilt.

Four Oceanside men were arrested for allegedly beating two people while using sexually-oriented slurs in Babylon Village on Sunday morning.

The four men – Gregory Gilbert, 20; Shane Buckley, 18; Nicholas Battaglia, 18; and Justin Buckley, 17, were walking on Deer Park Avenue around 3:30 a.m. when the group asked two men for directions to the Long Island Rail Road station.

According to Suffolk County Police the group of men proceeded to punch, kick and shove the two men while using sexually oriented slurs against the men based on their suspected sexual orientation.

Arrests

  • On July 10 at 2:33 a.m., Randy E. Almonte, 28, of Roslyn Heights, was arrested on a bench warrant for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol following an investigation by police personnel on Merrick Road in Rockville Centre.

  • On July 10 at 12:17 p.m., Robert Sharkey Jr., 50, of Rockville Centre, was arrested for assault in the third degree and aggravated criminal contempt following an investigation by police personnel on Jefferson Avenue in Rockville Centre.

  • On July 10 at 12:17 p.m., David C. Sharkey, 44, of Rockville Centre, was arrested for criminal contempt in the second degree following an investigation by police personnel on Jefferson Avenue in Rockville Centre.

  • On July 12 at 5:53 p.m., Lucretia K. Thomas, 39, of Rockville Centre, was arrested for petit larceny following an investigation by police personnel in the vicinity of King Kullen, located at 127 Sunrise Highway in Rockville Centre.

  • On July 19, as a result of an ongoing investigation, Garden City Detectives arrested a 19-year-old male from Elmont for criminal sale and criminal possession of a half-ounce of marijuana at the Nassau Boulevard Train Station. During the investigation, an 18-year-old male acquaintance of the suspect, also from Elmont, was arrested for possession of a forged Florida driver’s license.

  • On July 21, a Garden City police officer stopped a 43-year-old male from Huntington for driving his vehicle in an unsafe manner on Clinton Road by swerving from lane to lane, causing it to strike and mount the curb. The suspect was subsequently arrested and charged with DWI (.10 percent BAC), two unsafe lane violations, not wearing a seatbelt, and uninsured operation.

  • On July 23, a Garden City police officer stopped a vehicle with a defective brake light on Franklin Avenue. The driver, a 41-year-old male from Roosevelt, was placed under arrest for 26 outstanding driving license suspensions, as well as a revoked license due to an administrative violation.
