Fatal Shooting Claims Life of Hempstead Man

A 24-year-old Hempstead man was killed early Friday in a shooting on Peters Avenue and the gunman is still at large.

According to Nassau County detectives, Hempstead Police responded to a call for shots fired in the vicinity of Ingraham Street and Peters Avenue shortly after midnight. Upon arrival, police discovered a male lying on the ground in front of 94 Peters Avenue. It was determined that the male victim, later identified as Jonnie Carroll III had been shot and was pronounced at the scene.

Robbery Suspect Breaks Teen's Nose, Steals iPad

Nassau County Police are investigating a robbery that occurred on Sunday Aug. 26, 2012 at 12:08 a.m. in Valley Stream. According to detectives, the male victim, 18 years of age, was walking on North Central Avenue when he was approached by a male black suspect, approximately 19 years old, 5’9” to 5’11’, wearing a black sweat shirt, jeans, a black doo-rag on his head, and riding a BMX bicycle.

The suspect stopped in front of the victim, blocking his path and then punched him in the face breaking his nose. He took the victim’s iPad and fled northbound on North Central Avenue. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injury.

Valley Stream Woman Arrested for Abusing Hospital Staff

Cops arrested a Valley Stream woman Thursday night for allegedly abusing staff at Franklin Hospital Medical Center.

According to Nassau County detectives, Fifth Precinct police officers were on an assignment at the medical center, located at 900 Franklin Ave. in North Valley Stream, when they observed Yolanda Battino, 44, become verbally and physically abusive towards hospital personnel. As officers attempted to assist the medical staff, the Battino refused their commands and then kicked an officer in the groin and scratched the officer’s arms, causing lacerations. She was eventually placed into custody. The officer was treated for her injuries and released.

Battino was charged with second-degree Assault and was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Friday.

Jewelry Stolen From Franklin Square Home

Nassau County Police are investigating a burglary that occurred on Monday August 20, at 1:20 p.m. in Franklin Square.

According to detectives, a male victim, 62 years of age, arrived home to his Rintin Street residence and discovered a male suspect in the upstairs of the house. He confronted the suspect, who fled on foot through the front door and was last seen southbound on Ribbon Street.

He is described as a male white, thin build wearing gray shorts, tan shirt, sandals in his late 20’s to early 30’s, 5’9” to 6’1” tall, balding with brown hair on the sides. The victim reports an unknown amount of jewelry was missing. There were no injuries reported.

Cops: Man Arrested for Using Counterfeit Money

A Brooklyn man was arrested last Saturday after he allegedly tried to purchase goods at the Green Acres Mall with counterfeit money, according to police.

Raymond Lewis, 46, is charged with 10 counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument.

On Aug. 18 at 7 p.m., police said Lewis entered Sears at 1150 Green Acres Mall and purchased a Nikon digital camera and other accessories totaling $864.58. He then tried to pay using nine alleged counterfeit $100 bills. According to police, upon Lewis’ arrest, officers found another counterfeit $100 bill in his possession.

Numerous sets of tires and rims were stolen from new vehicles stored in the Nissan storage facility on Stewart Avenue in Garden City on Aug. 22. Estimated loss: $78,000.

A complainant from Middle Road, Lake George reported on Aug. 16 that sometime between April 1 at 9 a.m. and Aug. 16 at 5 p.m., unknown person(s) entered his parents residence on Hempstead Avenue in Rockville Centre without authorization and stole a Mongoose Mountain bicycle valued at $1,250 from the basement. 

On Aug. 18 at 12:29 a.m., a complainant from Hillside Avenue in Rockville Centre reported that sometime between Aug. 18 at 2:30 p.m. and Aug. 19 at 12:29 a.m., unknown person(s) damaged a side door, entered her residence, and stole $2,340 from a second-floor bedroom.
