Cops Investigate Fatal Shooting in Hempstead

A 36-year-old man was gunned down in Hempstead Tuesday and the shooter is still on the lam.

The homicide occurred at 3:28 a.m. on Sept. 18. According to Nassau County Police Detectives, Hempstead Police responded for a call of shots fired at the rear parking lot of 45 Main St. Police located the victim -- Torrance Maye, 36, of Hempstead -- with an apparent gunshot wound lying next to a vehicle.  The victim was transported to the Nassau University Medical Center, where he was pronounced by hospital staff at 4:12 am.

Gunman Robs Valley Stream Domino's 

The Domino's Pizza on Merrick Road in Valley Stream was robbed early Saturday by an armed suspect.

Nassau County Police's Robbery Squad is investigating the crime, which occurred on Sept. 22 at 1:30 a.m. at the store located at 479 W. Merrick Road. According to detectives, an unknown male black suspect, approximately 5’09’’ tall, wearing a black sweatshirt, black jeans and red shoes entered the store through the rear door. The suspect displayed a black handgun as he ordered the two male employees, ages 28 and 21, to lie on the floor. He then removed an unknown amount of cash from the register and fled in an unknown direction. There were no injuries reported.

Police: Husband Tries to Choke Wife at the Wheel

A police aide conducting traffic enforcement on Cherry Valley Avenue in the vicinity of Garden City Middle School alerted police officers of a domestic occurrence at his location. Upon arrival, a 69-year-old woman stated that as she was driving her vehicle eastbound on Stewart Avenue, she was having a verbal argument with her husband, the front seat passenger, when he began to choke her. The suspect, a male 75-year-old from New Hyde Park, was placed under arrest for criminal obstruction of an airway and reckless endangerment.

Assaults Reported in Rockville Centre

  • On Sept. 4 at 2:30 p.m., a complainant from Amity Harbor reported that on Sept. 2, while in Kasey's Bar on N. Park Avenue, two unknown males were fighting and she was punched by one of them in the left eye and ear, causing a concussion requiring medical attention.
  • On Sept. 7 at 4:25 p.m., a female complainant from Old Mill Court reported that at approximately 12:30 a.m., a female acquaintance assaulted her resulting in substantial pain while in front of her residence.
  • On Sept. 9 at 2:49 a.m., a complainant from Lynbrook reported that an unknown person shoved him into a storefront window at Sushi-Ya on N. Park Avenue, causing a laceration to his right forearm and damage to the window valued at $500.

Police: Man Stole From New York Sports Clubs

A Medford man was arrested Thursday and charged for three burglaries at mulitple Nassau County New York Sports Clubs, including one in Garden City.

According to Nassau County detectives, Richard Ray entered two New York Sports Club locations in Hicksville and Garden City on three occassions and broke into three lockers during two of the visits.

Detectives say during a Sept. 1 visit at 12 p.m. to the location at 100 Duffy Ave. in Hicksville, Ray entered one locker and took a wallet with credit cards, an iPhone, cash and keys before fleeing the gym.

On Monday, detectives say Ray went to the 833 Franklin Ave. location in Garden City at 2:30 p.m., entering into two lockers, taking cash from the first locker and car keys from the second locker. After leaving the gym, detectives say Ray used the vehicle's remote to find and steal the victim's car.

On Thursday, detectives say Ray returned to the Hicksville location at 1 p.m., but with a stolen key card that did not match his face. The desk clerk noticed the picture did not match. Ray was questioned and then left the gym. The desk clerk then alerted the gym manager and 911 was contacted.

Ray was located at 2 p.m. the same day on the corner of W. John Street and Strong Street in Hicksville and was arrested.

Police say that during the processing of his arrest, the stolen vehicle was found in Patchogue.

Ray is charged with three counts of burglary in the third degree, two counts of grand larceny in the fourth degree and an unrelated warrant charge, police said. Ray's arraignment is scheduled for Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
