Dumpster Fire Erupts Near Herber School

Blaze prompts Ocean Avenue shutdown; no one hurt, officials said.

A dumpster fire erupted near Herber Middle School Thursday evening and prompted a shutdown of Ocean Avenue.

Malverne Fire Department officials confirmed the fire started in a dumpster in the vicinity of the school Thursday night.

Witnesses reported seeing bonfire-like flames as crews extinguished the blaze. As of 8:40 p.m., the fire had been extinguished, fire officials confirmed.

No one was reportedly injured.

Malverne Police said an investigation was ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the fire, a cause of which has not yet been confirmed.

Crews closed down Ocean Avenue between School Street and Aberdeen Street as officials secured the scene. Fire officials said the streets would soon be clear for traffic.
