Malverne Cop Injured in Ocean Avenue Crash

Officer McNelis struck by car while responding to incident Friday evening.

A officer was injured Friday evening in a car accident on Ocean Avenue while responding to a call.

Officer Jo Anne McNelis had been traveling north on Ocean Avenue shortly before 6 p.m. when she was called to respond to an incident on Hempstead Avenue. According to Malverne Police Chief John Aresta, McNelis put on her sirens as she prepared to make a right turn onto Wright Avenue, and traffic came to a halt except for one car, a tan Dodge Caravan, travelling in the right-hand southbound lane.

The driver, an East Rockaway man, told police he did not see the patrol car making the turn, and therefore, didn't stop.

"He hit her right front fender and pushed her into a telephone pole," Aresta told Patch.

Malverne Ambulance Corps responded to the accident and transported Officer McNelis to an area hospital, where she was treated for multiple contusions and neck and back pain. She was released later that night. The driver of the Dodge refused medical treatment at the scene.
