Malverne F.D. Stamps Out Small Basement Fire

Firefighters respond to Malverne home on Hempstead Avenue Sunday night.

A small fire broke out Sunday night in the basement of a Malverne home located on Hempstead Avenue across from Grace Lutheran Church.

"Upon arrival we had a heavy smoke condition," Malverne Fire Chief Danny Morgan told Patch at the scene. "It took us a while to locate the basement stairs and the fire itself."

When they did they were able to contain the fire to one room, a kitchen in the basement, and extinguished the small blaze within 10 minutes, he said.

Approximately 50 Malverne firefighters along with members of the Lakeview, Elmont and Franklin Square Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the call, which came in shortly after 10 p.m. (Lynbrook and Valley Stream stood by at the Malverne firehouse.) The Malverne Volunteer Ambulance Corps. was also at the scene, along with Trustees Patricia Callahan, Michael Bailey, Joseph Hennessy and Jack O'Brien and a number of onlookers.

Fortunately, no one was injured.

"Everybody was out of the house prior to the fire department arrival," Morgan said.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal was also at the scene and began conducting an investigation into the cause of the incident, which has not been determined at this time.
