Police: West Hempstead Man Arrested for DWI, Among Other Charges
Suspect left the scene of an accident before being spotted by police for erratic driving on Hempstead Turnpike.
Kelvin Anorue, a 21-year-old West Hempstead resident, was arrested on Hempstead Turnpike early Saturday morning, police said.
Anorue was seen driving westbound on Hempstead Turnpike at 4:50 a.m. in his 2007 Honda, which had "extensive front end damage." According to police, upon pulling the vehicle over it was discovered that the suspect was driving under the influence of alcohol.
While investigating this incident, police said that they received a call about an accident where one of the involved vehicles left the scene. Police determined that Anorue was involved in the prior accident. Allegedly, after the accident had occurred, the "defendant removed a cell phone from a 51-year-old male victims pocket," police said. Anorue threatened the victim with a weapon and then fled the scene. No injuries from this incident were reported.
