Stores Clean Up Aftermath of Devastating Fire

The damage was estimated to be more than $300,000.

Village workers were busy at Tuesday afternoon, just hours after a devastating through the 25-year-old Merrick Road business.

According to Lynbrook Fire Department Ex-Captain Steve Grogan, the fire started in Lynbrook Bicycles around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday morning and spread upward to the roof and to the back of the store. The fire was contained to the bicycle store, although the two adjoining stores --  and  -- did receive damage as doors were opened and ceilings were pulled to make sure the fire had not extended.

According to the Nassau County Fire Marshal, the fire was most likely caused by an electrical problem near the front window of Lynbrook Bicycles.

The three storefronts were boarded up shortly after the blaze. The exterior of the building in the vicinity of the bicycle shop was charred by the fire, making the store's front sign unrecognizable.

The damage was estimated to be more than $300,000, Grogan said. The $300,000 included the dozens upon dozens of bicycles that were destroyed in the blaze.

The Village of Lynbrook Building Department has notified the property owner and current tenants.

“The property has been secured at this time,” the building department said.

The owner of an adjacent store on the property, who wished to remain anonymous, said that she was “lucky” since her unit suffered virtually no damages.

“It is tough,” she said. “At least nobody was here at that time.”
