A West Hempstead man was arrested and charged Sunday night for driving while intoxicated with a child in his vehicle.
According to detectives, Hempstead Village Police observed a 2005 Ford pick-up truck traveling westbound on Front Street in a reckless manner. Police were able to conduct a safe stop of the vehicle in Hempstead and noticed that the driver’s 8-year-old daughter was seated in the rear section of the vehicle.
A police investigation led to the arrest of James Chadderton, 51, of West Hempstead. The daughter was released to the mother, who responded to the scene. There were no reported injuries.
Chadderton is charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law, which makes it a felony to drive drunk with a child under 15 in the car. He is also charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, second-degree criminal contempt, driving while intoxicated and failure to stay in a single Lane. His arraignment is scheduled for Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.
