My name is Diamond and I am a sweet, shy little gal who is looking for my forever home.

While I’m personable with most everyone, my personality really blossoms when I’m with my special people! I enjoy playing with people, and though I’m not terribly playful with toys now, I may become more so once in a home. I tolerate all types of handling, but I was so unsettled during my behavior evaluation that I couldn’t really eat so I couldn’t be evaluated for resource guarding.

Unusual, new people make me a bit uncertain and conflicted when first meeting them, so I look to my human companion for direction. Patient introductions with people, with them giving me treats, will help me get more comfortable with them, and training will help me gain confidence. Due to my shyness, I may be more comfortable in a household of teenagers and up.

I’m not good with other dogs and should be kept away from them.

I have already had some training (sit, down, …) and am eager to learn more for a taste of my favorite treats! I am proud to say that I walk very nicely on the leash. Training may help build my confidence and will help us forge a relationship.

The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter is working hard to assist the many dogs and cats that have entered the shelter as a result of their owners being displaced in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. As part of the shelter's Orphans of the Storm Pet Adoption program, all adoption fees are being waived from December 1, 2012 to January 19, 2013.
