Bay Park Sewage Plant Ranked Among Worst in New Report

Citizens Campaign for the Environment releases the first Long Island Sewage Report Card, which analyzes 10 large sewage treatment plants across Long Island.

The Bay Park Sewage Plant has been ranked among the worst on Long Island, according to a new report by Citizens Campaign for the Environment, a non-profit advocacy organization based in Farmingdale.

The report analyzed permit violations in the last five years for all 10 plants, and violations were separated into two categories of overdue violations and water quality violations.

Bay Park had 119 total violations, 65 overdue violations, and 54 water quality violations, according to the report.

The Huntington Sewage Treatment Plant received the top overall score of an A+, while Bay Park was at the bottom along with Long Beach and Stony Brook STPs with a "D" grade.

In the review, the CCE said they reviewed data from 2005 through 2010 for all 10 facilities, and personal interviews were also conducted with management staff of each facility.

"Frankly, Long Island’s sewage woes are frightening," said Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director, Citizens Campaign for the Environment, in a press release. "Aging infrastructure, antiquated plants, and zero dollars result in decreased water quality, shellfish closures, outbreaks of toxic algae and public health threats."

The plant has been at the center of residents concerns for years. Back in November of 2010, it was found that the plant had been an excessive amount of solid waste into the Reynolds Channel.
