Becker, Challengers to Debate

Scaturro, Maloney to discuss 4th Congressional District issues with Lynbrook lawmaker prior to Sept. 14 primary

Lynbrook resident Francis Becker may have secured the GOP nomination in the 4th Congressional District, but that hasn't deterred two other Republican candidates seeking the right to challenge Democrat Carolyn McCarthy this November.

New Hyde Park resident Frank Scaturro and Baldwin resident Dan Maloney will face off against the longtime Nassau lawmaker in a debate to be held by the League of Women Voters on Aug. 31, just weeks away from the Sept. 14 Republican primary, which the two are qualified to run in.

Maloney has a Wall Street background, having worked for Merrill Lynch and Security Pacific before joining the New York City Department of Finance managing computer operations and later returning to the private sector.

He is married, is active in the Knights of Columbus in Baldwin, and has a part-time job with a home-health care agency in Rockville Centre.

Maloney, a registered Republican and member of the Tea Party movement, said he is running not as a politician, but as someone who will set the nation back on the path to fiscal stability.

"I'm fed up with the situation we're in … we've had politicians and we had lawyers representing us and they haven't done a good job," Maloney said. "I'm not looking to make a career out of [politics] — I'm just looking to get the job done and get out."

Scaturro is a lifelong resident of New Hyde Park. He served as Counsel to the Constitution for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, and was an aide for the nominations of Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito.

Scaturro, on his website, explains that the nation could experience many more years of hardship if a positive change does not come soon, adding that he "will work to make our federal government accountable to the people again, reign in out-of-control spending, and reduce a crushing federal tax burden that hurts Long Island citizens and businesses."

Becker is a lifelong Lynbrook resident, and has served the 6th Legislative District since its inception, having been elected for eight consecutive two-year terms. He is married and has three children.

Becker currently works as a certified financial planner, a job he believes has given him the tools to succeed as a Congressman. He vowed to do things differently than McCarthy, President Barack Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

"Carolyn McCarthy voted with Obama and Pelosi 97 percent of the time, she voted for a failed stimulus, Obamacare, and many other bills that are opposed to the residents of this district," Becker said. "If elected, I'm going to Washington to stop the out-of-control spending, to create jobs, and to restore the American dream."

The debate will be held at the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library (1125 Broadway, Hewlett) at 8 p.m.
