Curran, Students Celebrate Flag Day

Multiple schools from Lynbrook, East Rockaway and Malverne came out to celebrate Flag Day.

Assemblyman Brian Curran (Lynbrook - 14th AD) recently honored the kindergarten through fifth-grade winners and honorable mentions of the annual essay and poster contest on "What the American Flag Means to You," as a commemoration of Flag Day.

Each winner at the June 10 event received a New York State citation, as well as an American flag.

"We had a wonderful turnout this Sunday for Malverne, Lynbrook and East Rockaway students to participate in a competition honoring the most recognized symbol in the world, the American flag," Curran said. "These boys and girls showed a true understanding and dedication to the tenets and values which our flag represents."

All public and private schools in Lynbrook, East Rockaway and Malverne were invited to participate. Schools that participated were:

  • Centre Avenue (East Rockaway)
  • Marion Street
  • Waverly
  • Lynbrook Kindergarten Center
  • Davison Avenue
  • Maurice Downing
  • Herbert Middle School
  • Our Lady of Lourdes.

The contest had more tha 200 participants. Winners of the competition also received a gift certificate to Mitchell's for a free sundae; runners up received a Carvel gift certificate good for one free ice cream cone.

“I hope these students saw how much their presentations meant to the community. Parents, veterans and school personnel attended the event to see what the American flag meant to these gifted students. If this Flag Day event was any indication of the respect our schoolchildren have for the American Dream, then the United States of America will be in good hands for generations to come,” said Curran.

That’s very nice that school districts that have the highest school taxes and costs, areRead More receiving additional money. The problem is that our state is in dire financial trouble and we can’t afford it. Upstate NY is a distressed disaster. How much more taxes are we going to pay?. Hear those feet marching out of state. Try fighting for drilling so we have jobs and revenue.

.......there they go again whitewashing a dilemma they don't want to touch......unconscionableRead More salaries and pensions paid by the taxpayer for incompetence? Not to mention 13 week vacations as well as numerous 1/2 days and weather shortened days. A $50000 band aid we end up paying indirectly anyway only increases taxes further down the road. They are either that stupid or they think we are!
