Gogarty Running for Election Tuesday to East Rockaway Village Board

Voting takes place Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

East Rockaway Trustee Richard Gogarty, who was appointed a trustee in 2011 unanimously by the Village Pride Party for a seat vacated by Irene Villacci, is running unopposed Tuesday for the unexpired term.

Gogarty was a long-serving Chairman of the East Rockaway Board of Zoning Appeals. He and his family also have deep roots in the community, descending from his great-grandfather Cap Abrams, a clam digger and builder in East Rockaway in the 1890s. Gogarty also served as a First Sergeant in the United States Army for more than 20 years.

Village Pride Party President Edward Zangrillo said Gogarty is highly qualified for the position and offered his support.

"[Richard] is a former chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals, and his affiliations with other organizations more than show his affinity and affection for the village," Zangrillo said. "He’s a concerned individual who is looking to make the quality of life for East Rockaway better."

The term is one-year and will expire next March. Since Gogarty is running unopposed, he needs the majority vote - 50 percent of votes plus one to be elected, according to Zangrillo.
