Democratic county executive candidate Adam Haber and his campaign are discontinuing a television ad after complaints from Italian-American groups who claimed the ad was offensive.
Haber, who is running against former county executive Tom Suozzi on the Democratic ticket in the upcoming November election, said the ad was not meant to offend anyone, but rather detail “Suozzi's patronage raises” and focus on the “massive debt” Suozzi left the county with.
News 12 reported:
Members of the Order Sons of Italy, located in Bellmore, say they've been working for years to crush stereotypes of Italian Americans. They say the ad sets them back. Joseph Rondinelli, New York state president of the Order Sons of Italy, says he wants Haber to apologize and terminate the ad.
"I apologize to anyone who has been offended,” Haber said in release. “As a candidate and county executive, I will always strive to listen to the concerns of all Nassau residents and I hope we can get back to the issues as quickly as possible."
