Hurricane Irene Anniversary: Hempstead Town Tally

How much the storm caused in preparation and damages.

As Hurricane Irene barreled through Long Island last August, residents endured flooding, downed trees, power outages and damaged homes.

Local municipalities - including the Town of Hempstead - worked around the clock to clean the streets, parks and waterfronts. But what was the final total bill of devastation?

According the Town of Hempstead, the total cost of preparation, clean up and repairs incurred by the town was $3,632,087.16. The town was approved to be reimbursed for the entire amount in FEMA and New York State OEM Public Assistant Disaster Aid. Seventy-five percent will be paid by FEMA and the remaining 25 percent by NYS OEM.

To date, however, the town has only received $385,512.61 in aid from both agencies. They expect to receive the remaining aid within the coming weeks.
