There’s just a little over a month until the April 15 tax-filing deadline arrives.
The Internal Revenue Service is recommending four free methods for receiving help with filing returns.
First, the IRS is providing tips and information at 1040 Central on the agency’s website. Taxpayers can find information on filing options, identity theft, tax forms and frequently asked questions. Samples of online tools, such as Interactive Tax Assistant and Where’s My Refund?, can also be found on the site.
Taxpayers can also receive free help on the phone by calling 800-829-1040 or order tax forms and publications at 800-829-3676.
They can also check the status of their refunds by calling 800-829-4477. These phone services are available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program can help taxpayers who earn $51,000 or less annually prepare and file their returns. The Tax Counseling for the Elderly program is also free. To find a community site that offers these programs, call 800-906-9887.
IRS taxpayer assistance centers can also be found in the five boroughs. At the sites, IRS employees can offer personal assistance with a variety of tax issues. Check the IRS’s website for locations, business hours and services offered.
