Scarano was an important part of helping construct the in back of Village Hall. Scarano said he had the opportunity to come down to the site and reflect this past Friday.

"It was very hard to see it at first, because it brought back some memories that I don't like to talk about," Scarano said. The Port Authority lost a total of 37 police officers in 9/11, the largest loss of life of any police department in history, he said.

Scarano said that it was also nice for him to learn about the "19 members of the village of Lynbrook who didn't come home that day."

"I learned a little bit about each of them," he said.

Mayor William Hendrick and the board honored Scarano with a plaque and thanked him for his service.

"Memorials that you’ve erected outside and plaque dedications like this, make us never forget and always remember," Scarano said. "I just want to say thank you again from the bottom of my heart."

RVC Inn Public Hearing Set for April 2

The building department has received a special use application to re-zone three parcels of land, which are located in a residential district, to convert them to a commercial zone district. The owner of the RVC Inn hotel wishes to put a 44-space parking lot on that land, subject to approval of the re-zoning application and special use application, the board said.

Residents 200 feet of the property in all directions should receive a letter from the owners of the hotel 10 days and 20 days prior to the hearing date, according to the board. Before the hearing date, the board should also receive an affidavit that the hotel owners have notified all property owners within that area.

"It’s on their dollar to send that out,” Hendrick said.

Deputy Mayor Alan Beach requested literature from the property owners stating that they have canvassed the area prior to the hearing. “We need some sort of literature to verify it," he said. The board asked for the literature prior to the next board meeting on March 19.

Tally-Ho to Celebrate 100th Anniversary; Street To Be Re-Named

The board announced that the Tally-Ho company will soon be celebrating their 100th anniversary. On March 24 at 7 p.m., the firehouse will be hosting a "Company Re-Union Meeting" at the firehouse to commemorate the actual date of the 100th anniversary, and a coalition will follow, according to their website.

The village will have the parking lot closed for the anniversary, and they will put up a “DeCarlo Way" street sign on Horton Ave. for DeCarlo Jr., who passed away on Jan. 23 at the age of 86. DeCarlo was a 65-year member of Tally-Ho Engine Company 3. The announcement was met with applause from the crowd.

Additionally, on Sunday, March 25, the company will host an "Open House" at Tally-Ho beginning at 11:00 AM.

Village to Apply for CDBG Grant

The board said they will apply for the 2012 CDBG grant as use it for improvements to W. Merrick Road. Village Administrator John Giordano said he recommends the application be for a total of $250,000. On average, he said the village usually ends up getting "about half of that."

The grant would be used for streetscape improvements, such as ornamental street lights, additional trees and overall enhancements to the area.

"We feel that will be a catalyst to help that area re-develop," Giordano said.

Phil Healy, Superintendent of the Department of Public Works, expressed similar sentiments.

"It would be great to target that spot, coming in from Valley Stream - it's the whole entrance to the village," Healy said. "It would be a spark contrast from what you’re leaving…no offense to Valley Stream.”
