Townhouse Proposal Coming to Malverne Board

After months of speculation, village officials and residents learn about plans for the former Woodland Nursery site.

When demolition started in August on the old Woodland Nursery property, that rumors had been swirling around the village of Malverne that the land owner was considering erecting townhouses at the site.

Wednesday night, village officials and residents learned this was true.

Richard Barbieri, of the village's Building's Department, told the board during their Oct. 5 public meeting that they should expect to have a proposal in their hands within the week.

"The developer will be submitting a petition to the board for review for rezoning with consideration of the possibility of townhouses," Barbieri said.

At the moment, the lot at 131 Franklin Avenue is completely vacant. The three buildings in early August and the was instructed by the board to bring the area to a park-like state until the fate of the site was decided.

"It will come to the Board of Trustees first with the consideration of a zoning change and then have to go to several different boards - Zoning, possibily Planning and certainly, ultimately, Architectural Review," Barbieri said. "It's going to be scrutinized and in public."
