Canzoneri-Callahan Wins Malverne Village Special Election

Patricia Canzoneri-Callahan will serve a three year term on the village's Board of Trustees.

Patricia Canzoneri-Callahan won Tuesday's special election in the village of Malverne, securing a three-year term on the Board of Trustees.

Canzoneri-Callahan, of the Malverne Independent Party, earned 767 votes compared to Dr. Carol Hassett's 537 votes. Village Clerk and Elections Commissioner Terry Emmel announced the results shortly after polls closed at 9 p.m. and the votes were counted.

Canzoneri-Callahan had been serving on the village board since July, when she was appointed by Mayor Patricia Norris McDonald to fill the seat left vacant when her husband Jim Callahan passed away until the special election was held.

"This is a very meaningful win because I can now finish out my husband's term," Canzoneri-Callahan told Patch Tuesday night after the results were read. "He was such a diligent public servant and now I can finish what he started."

The support she received from Malverne voters "is extremely touching," she said. "I know my husband would be touched also that we had so many people working so hard for this win. It is overwhelming. I'm speechless and honored to be part of this town."

Canzoneri-Callahan also thanked her family including her four children - Thomas, Katherine, Elizabeth and Christina - who were by her side throughout the election, even in the voting booth with her when she cast her ballot Tuesday evening.

"They have been very supportive...very excited and very proud of me," she said.  "Win or lose, they would have still been proud of me."
