Canzoneri-Callahan Wins Malverne Village Special Election

Patricia Canzoneri-Callahan will serve a three year term on the village's Board of Trustees.

Patricia Canzoneri-Callahan won Tuesday's special election in the village of Malverne, securing a three-year term on the Board of Trustees.

Canzoneri-Callahan, of the Malverne Independent Party, earned 767 votes compared to Dr. Carol Hassett's 537 votes. Village Clerk and Elections Commissioner Terry Emmel announced the results shortly after polls closed at 9 p.m. and the votes were counted.

Canzoneri-Callahan had been serving on the village board since July, when she was appointed by Mayor Patricia Norris McDonald to fill the seat left vacant when her husband Jim Callahan passed away until the special election was held.

"This is a very meaningful win because I can now finish out my husband's term," Canzoneri-Callahan told Patch Tuesday night after the results were read. "He was such a diligent public servant and now I can finish what he started."

The support she received from Malverne voters "is extremely touching," she said. "I know my husband would be touched also that we had so many people working so hard for this win. It is overwhelming. I'm speechless and honored to be part of this town."

Canzoneri-Callahan also thanked her family including her four children - Thomas, Katherine, Elizabeth and Christina - who were by her side throughout the election, even in the voting booth with her when she cast her ballot Tuesday evening.

"They have been very supportive...very excited and very proud of me," she said.  "Win or lose, they would have still been proud of me."

I am not shocked she won. It's all about the last name...

Thank you to each candidate for caring enough to run. Mrs. Callahan in now on her way to being Malverne's next mayor. I hope that the Mayor will recognize Mrs. Callahan's credentials by appointing her as Budget Director for the next fiscal year. We desperately need new budget management.

Wow! How inappropriately rude! Really? It is ALL about the last name? Not anything to do with her amazing credentials? Do some homework.

Congratulations Mrs. Callahan. You will do a superb job and yes keep an open mind for the Mayor seat you would do an excellent job there and would love to keep the tradition of "women in office" The town can only benenfit from it.

she was not elected because of her last name, but as a result of her experience and expertise!

Patty and Trish make a great team. Both come from families that have always been active in the Malverne community and each demonstrates an indomitable spirit and courage in the face of adversity. Only good can come from them and politics ain't easy in Malverne. I am already seeing changes. Best wishes. -Laurence
