Lynbrook Students Read For the Record

Students at Waverly Park School help set new record for largest shared reading experience.

Doing their part to promote literacy, students at the took part in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record Day to help set a new world record for the largest shared reading experience. They joined millions of adults and children all over the world to read Anna Dewdney’s classic children’s story “Llama Llama Red Pajama.”

Reading teacher Maria Viviano-Farry read the story aloud over the school’s public address system while students followed along, reading the e-book version on their classroom Starboards.

Everyone agreed that they had enjoyed their shared reading experience and were proud to be a part of history in the making. They were also proud to know that through their efforts, they had contributed to a worthy cause. As part of this program, over 50,000 free books will distributed to disadvantaged children around the country.

Presented in partnership with the Pearson Foundation, Jumpstart’s Read for the Record encourages record-breakers to spread the word that reading with a child before he or she enters kindergarten can improve his or her chances of graduating from high school by as much as 30 percent. In the process, Jumpstart and the Pearson Foundation aim to draw attention to the growing crisis for disadvantaged young children whose literacy experience is limited.
