Malverne Hosts ‘Junk to Funk’ Fashion Show

The “Junk to Funk” Recycled Fashion Show was recently held in Malverne to honor Earth Day, celebrated worldwide on April 22.

The event -- sponsored by the Davison Avenue PTA  -- was intended to create environmental awareness to the general public about recycling.

All of the participants created designs using recycled items ranging from cereal boxes to magazines to plastic bags. Each participant was presented with a certificate of merit for their participation.

  • First Place: Annie Hongthong with model Samantha Murphy; Title “Weave got Style”
  • Second Place: Katherine Rodriguez; Title "Tribute to Woman's World Magazine"
  • Third Place: Jon Carlos Quintanilla with model Emely Rodriguez; Title "Shopping bag parade"
Volunteer judges for the evening's events were: Howard T. Herber art teacher Stacey Clayton, Howard T. Herber science teacher Virginia DeLeo and Howard T. Herber science and mathematics chairperson Rose Ricca.
