Malverne Resident Receives SUNY Chancellor’s Award at Farmingdale State

Malverne resident Christie Deeks was one of three Farmingdale State College students who were recently honored by Nancy L. Zimpher, Chancellor of the State University of New York, at a reception in Albany.

Deeks is a recipient of the Betsy Smith Cronin Scholarship and has been on both the dean’s and the president’s lists, in addition to being a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

A major in Dental Hygiene, Deeks has served as Treasurer of SADHA, the organization for Student Members of the American Dental Hygiene Association. She has provided free screenings for oral cancer at many local events, including at Belmont Racetrack, as well as at the nationally-organized Give Kids a Smile Day and Give a Marine a Smile Day. In her local community, Deeks has raised funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and for Autism Speaks.

Deeks was part of a group of 243 students from SUNY campuses throughout New York State who received the Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence.

The Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence was created to recognize students who have best demonstrated and been recognized for the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts or career achievement.

Since 1998, just 49 Farmingdale students have received this award.

“I look forward to formally recognizing these outstanding students at our 94th commencement in May,” Farmingdale State College President W. Hubert Keen said. “Having the opportunity to get to know our students is one of the highlights of the awards season.”
