Malverne Teacher Named Long Island's Educator of the Month

Herber Middle School science teacher Ginny DeLeo selected by Dowling College and News 12.

Long Island's Educator of the Month for December was Malverne's very own Ginny DeLeo, a science teacher at Howard T. Herber Middle School.

Dowling College and News 12 selected DeLeo, who teaches Living Environment and is the science research coordinator for the middle school, for the honor after an administrator at Herber nominated her.

After receiving her Bachelor's Degree in Biology and Secondary Education from Molloy College, DeLeo earned her Master's from Adelphi University. She has more than 30 years of experience in the education field and has devoted the past 28 years to the Malverne school district.

In recent years, DeLeo earned the John Murray Award, which honors a teacher who has made an impact on the district, and the NAACP Award. Under her direction, last year students in her eighth grade science research class became New York State finalist runner-ups in Disney's Planet Challenge competition for their project on plastic pollution.

"I love this district," DeLeo says. "Parents are nothing but supportive here."
